unemployment

old mechanics sign

faded rusty letters

objecting

to its one chain swing

in cold wind

humming

neon beer add

blinking

on and off

Crunch of gravel

on unswept side walk

under boots

that haven’t seen work in

three years

Distant traffic

forgotten town

clink of coins in deep woolen pocket

crumpled paper bill

25 cents

50

75

Not enough

hunched shoulders

collar up

keep walking

pass warm walls

lit windows

conversation

Maybe something will show up

a friendly face

a dollar in a gutter

a reason for hope
